A team of researchers from the University of Bonn in Germany studied the immediate effects of physical exercise on intestinal absorption and metabolism of calcium. In this cross-over study, 18 male athletes either had to perform a 60 minute run or had to rest for 60 minutes. Measures indicating calcium absorption were significantly increased three hours after exercise compared to athletes at rest, suggesting that exercise has a beneficial effect on calcium absorption and metabolism.
